2004... Myspace, FUBU, Ecko, Enyce, DaDa, White-Tees, Air Forces. These things may make you feel a bit nostalgic as you look back to your middle school years. If your a male, your clothes were probably three sizes too big. Females were turning heads in the halls with their jersey-dresses. When you open up your yearbook from 2004-2005, you may cringe at what you see. Don't feel a bit of embarrassment though, we all have the same reaction. Let's go back in time and take a look at the stars I have always looked up too, then fast forward 10 years later.
Jay-z
Here's Jay-z in 2004. He emerged as one of the hottest rappers in the game and led the hip-hop culture in style. Hes got he's towel around his head which was a common summertime style. The "throwback" 76ers jersey and an American flag bandanna around his wrist.
Let's fast forward to 2014. Still at the top of the game, his style has evolved. Here, he has a more conservative color scheme using darker tones, leather vest, and jean jacket. He's got a watch as opposed to the bandanna, and a straight forward hat instead of a towel for head wear. 2014 lends a more sophisticated look when it comes to style.
Eminem
Here's Eminem in 2004. Notice the trending style of head wear. Here he's got the shirt wrapped around his head with an athletic headband. In the early 2000's it was very popular to wear sportswear causally. Em also coordinated the blank tee with the headband. Another male trend was blank tees in all colors. Usually a few sizes too big.
2014. Again the more conservative, safisticated look. Better fitting clothes. More clean cut and less flashy.
Kanye West
Kanye West is someone who came into the Hip-Hop culture and went with a different look. At the time, it was considered weird but in hindsight he was ahead of the game. Nonetheless, he also evolved his look. He was one of the artist who made a push toward the collard shirts and sweaters. Ralph Lauren can also thank him for pushing them into the urban culture.
In 2014, he is still pushing the envelope on fashion but look how its changed. Again darker tones and less flashy. Although the long chains are still in style in the hip-hop culture, they are becoming less popular.
2014... Polo, True Religion, Instagram, Vine, Twitter, Selfies, Michael Kors, Twerking, Jordans. It is interesting to think about how we will feel about all of these things in another decade. As society evolves and technology as well as social medias make the world smaller it will be intriuging to see what 2024 has to bring. Nowadays, because of such things, people are getting slang and styles from across the nation. The age of different regions having different lifestyles is slowing coming to an end.
Lastly..me
It wouldn't be right to point out other people's past without me doing so to myself. Here, I have the red Rocawear collared shirt. It isn't visible in the picture but yes, those are male Capri's. Another trend that many of us look back on with just a tad bit of shame.
Fast forwarding to 2014, here I am with my brother and cousins (Me in the middle) . Just like the artist we looked up for so long, our styles have evolved. Again the reoccurring theme, more conservative and sophisticated.
What were you wearing 10 years ago?
